Conclusion : the final ending

This will be the last blog entry for my Intphil subject and hopefully I would have time to continue writing for my own happiness. For three months, I learned a lot in our Intphil course which always makes me ponder every time there is space where I can stare at nothingness and dream. This course has affected greatly my way of praising God. At this point I am like in a fork road, but with a compass. I know what road to take but Philosophy makes me think twice.
I really had a lot of ideas for my blog entries but didn’t have the chance to write it because it would be too short or concise and I am afraid it will not meet the requirements. I would like to briefly narrate it here. en-soi state where people are objects that feels no shame because of the absent of the other. This concept is very different to Sartre’s play No Exit.
I remember one Miss Universe Pageant, the final question asked was. “Why do you blush?” Huh? Funny question. But now, I can answer that well in philosophical form by saying that the reason we blush is because of the presence of the “other”. We suddenly become conscious and force to look at our own self. From the Universe to the black hole. From the vast freedom we have by the look of the other we limit our selves in their views and follow what is favorable to them.
Dual Personality: the presence of the other
I am fun, noisy, and usually ecstatic at school but quiet and contained at home. This is very much influenced by the presence of Sartre’s the other and related to Heidegger’s falleness into the they.
Where do I stand?
I am the pour-soi standing between facticity and transcendence. Struggling to plant my roots deeper to Christianity. determining which is better : being the Ubermensch or a Christian.
Instead of understanding more the world I live in I was placed in the middle.

We need Evil

It’s absurd to say that we need Evil. It’s not even right to say that Evil is a necessity. I am not being a Satanist or a Sadist. But evil spice up our life. It is very obvious in literatures. Imagine Little Red Ridding hood or the three little pigs without the big bad wolf, or Cinderella without her step sisters. What would be the basis of a hero? What is the essence of a God without Satan? (Lord, forgive me for I have sinned…..).

What is evil? This can easily be answered by saying it’s the opposite of good. In the dictionary it says: Evil is a term describing that which is regarded as morally bad, intrinsically corrupt, wantonly destructive, inhumane, or wicked. In most cultures, the word is used to describe acts, thoughts, and ideas which are thought to (either directly or causally) bring about withering and death —the opposite of life. However, the definition evil may differ widely from culture to culture. Whatever it may be evil is definitely something unpleasant.
For the purpose of this blog entry, I will try to be on the neutral side. We can’t really determine what is bad from good unless we base it on Kant law of Universalizability. Most of the time we base our action from the consequence we might receive. There was a movie by Keannu Reeves. devil’s Advocate The devil works hand in hand with the good to make us realize our mistakes. There is a better movie about evil and good mutual relationship (I’ll research on it sometime). God created evil to teach us lessons that bring us closer to Him. For example: There are times in our lives when we only feel hatred and do spectacular things (killing, stealing, revenge etc.) but after that we feel confuse because of our conscience and turn back to God.

Good cannot have existed without evil. (referring to the simple definition good is the opposite of evil) . Pain is evil, but a life without pain is also not advisable. (Blog about Life without pain) Lying can be bad or good depending on the consequence. So the problem of evil is solely based on God being the powerful and good, but in the consequence we get.

Life Without Pain VS Pain without Life
In connection to my blog about evil, no body wants to experience pain. Sometimes we pray that we would be numb and free from feeling the pain. We surely envy a person who feels sad and is always happy, like living a life without suffering. If we could only choose between life without pain or life with pain, only fools will choose the latter. (Yeal It’s possible to live a life without pain when your high on drugs) Contrary to that fact, there are 1 in one billion people in the world wants to experience pain.

A story that will be featured on Oprah anytime soon about a young girl Gabby who does not feel pain. Gabby was born with a unique genetic defect -- the nerve fibers that are supposed to record pain and send a signal to her brain fails to work. She literally feels no pain. Because Gabby can't feel any pain, she has no protective mechanism that would normally prevent her from harming herself. She no longer has any teeth; some she lost from biting on toys, others were removed to prevent her from biting her tongue and mouth. She scratched her eyes so badly that one is blind and the other is severely damaged. Now she is forced to wear goggles everyday to prevent her from scratching her eyes. She has broken her bones and suffered second-degree burns as a result of her condition.

Can we still say Life without pain is an ideal life to be?

Gabby’s condition is so heart breaking that it makes me really guilty for seeing a blessing as a misfortune. Often I complain the scratches we had or even just a mosquito bite. The mere fact that we experience pain proves that we are alive. (example: slapping our face to see if we are awake). When we are broken hearted, we feel more loved by our friends who console us until we forget the man/woman. Jesus Christ save us from sin from the unbearable human pain he shown.
.

According to Bertrand Russell "The secret of happiness lies in facing up to the fact that life is horrible, horrible, horrible." If we accept that we are just Dasein and we are thrown in a imperfect world where pain exist then we wouldn’t be surprise of the up coming suffering and would be ready for it. Unlike we refuse to accept that we always will suffer, it would be harder to cope and find solution to our suffering. We must not b scared about suffering because God left hope in Pandora’s box. Likewise Pain without life is a terrible nightmare to live. I definitely don’t want to be placed in that situation.

Pain is at times unfortunate, but necessary, as are costs. We cannot simply wish either of them away, nor would we want to if we could.

For those people who are pain in the neck. Thank you =P

paparazzi harassment
Yesterday November 19, 2005, we went to Sitio Karahome Bulacan. It’s a pain (in the ass) journey of about three hours. My legs are really numb by then, my back is sore, hair is a mess because of the very bumpy, pollution-full from the jeep. I have observed something odd, everyone seems to be noisy, energetic, excited in the first one hour, the next one hour everybody feels sleepy, same thing happens in the ride home. I find myself quite guilty, the whole time I was answering puzzles and not paid attention with the programs for our CWTS2. So near yet so far…, this is a line mentioned by one of my classmate in C2. If I’m not mistaken, this is an example of an oxymoron. I felt unlucky yet lucky: Yesterday was a very tiring day and we ready to depart and go home, my jeepney-mates joined forces and had fun taught of bulling us. Us, refers to me and carlo. All of the sudden they want us to sit together in a very crowded jeep and tried their best to squeeze us which was so uncomfortable. I tried my best not to blush or not to make funny reactions, on other words I tried my best not to react and to do nothing but smile and avoid their eyes. Then for three hours they are like paparazzi and shots many picture of us sitting together which seemed so shallow. Well, ok what’s new in a picture of two person sitting together, nevertheless it will be memorable. After one hour they, the bulliers, one by one took they shallow sleep, or perhaps just closing their eyes for some moment. Since the riot have calm down, it’s time for me to take a rest. After a while he leaned on my shoulder, and just like an alarm clock the paparazzi have rose from their shallow sleep and continuous flashes of camera was flashing on us. And just like the prisoner in Plato’s allegory it was piercing my eyes. Because of that I never got to sleep and wished that we arrive soon. I hate it! Yet I like it. Well no one likes being bullied, unless you’re a masochist. However the feeling that someone likes you is very fattening to the heart. That’s why I didn’t complain much. I just tried to keep it cool..

I hate \"Bats\"
I hate bats! figuratively

This short entry is dedicated to the pretenders and hopefully reflects on this and changes.

A bat are nocturnal mouselike mammal with forelimbs modified to form membranous wings and anatomical adaptations for echolocation by which they navigate. world reference They look cute (very ugly but interesting). They are also creepy and mysterious, they also look lazy as they perch on a tree branch. When I look at a bat I can’t find any sense of appreciation to their appearance. Probably their main purpose of existence is to balance the ecosystem.

I am taking this short entry into a higher level. Ever experienced a friend or an acquaintance who acted so kind when his/her with you and try to ruin your life when your not with him/her? Well, that person is a bat. He/she seems calm at day but vicious at night. I was reading this work from Jose Rizal, Women of Malolos who attack the falsity friars. The friars as he said were like bats, who shows to the people that they love and obey god and teach us stupid things like kneeling for the whole day praying the novenas, kissing the friars hand or giving donations which goes immediately to their pockets. This situation never differs from today. We can clearly see that “bat-ism” is highly practiced in the Philippine government. Our president gives good (and probably false) feed back to our country telling us that we are progressing (definitely not!) Perhaps our Government is having an impossible illusion that our country even stand a chance to progress. Ok, I think I have been very cruel. Philippines have a chance to progress only if both sides (government and people) cooperate. But what happens is that both sides would protest that the other should do something first. No one would like to take the first step, and if there may be a first step, that first step is the final step. I think Plato’s ideal state would be more appropriate for a government like ours. Singapore is fine country, a country which involves a lot of punishments, and bails. Filipinos have been a hard headed citizen ever since we were freed from the demanding Spaniards. Filipino individually developed a over-confidence attitude that everything may come out fine. We have over boosted our independence and liberated ourselves from the whole idea of rules. It’s impossible to discipline a country without sensible rules (senseless rules : Maragtas law) *That’s one bat down.

Another kind bat is a bat with two faces. The day and the night. I am sure that you have met people who seem kind when he/she is with you and tell you stories that mostly go this way: Avoid this person because she/he is like this. You should stop making friends with this person because he/she would just do this and that. And if you comply, then you have become his victim like the spider and the fly. Well here is some tip, the person you should avoid is the bat, because slowly you become his/her pray and finally you will just become his/her instrument for destruction. Think about this, if he/she does that to others what ere the odds of backstabbing you? Don’t be an ignorant, you should observe first who you want to be friend with.

obsessive-compulsive disorder

Here is a little story i got from the internet about a certain kind of weird disorder:
*Some kids like to wash their hands, but Sarah does it too much. She wants to stop, but her hands just don't feel clean enough and she can't make herself turn off the water. Sometimes she scrubs her hands until they are red and raw. After eating, she feels she has to wash again.
Because she spends so much time washing, Sarah has to rush to get to school on time. At school, she tries not to touch doorknobs or handrails, worrying that if she does she may catch a serious disease. Sometimes, Sarah gets behind in her classwork because she feels that she needs to keep checking it over and over.
During a quiz or test Sarah checks and rechecks every answer and erases anything that isn't perfectly straight or neat. Sometimes she erases so hard it tears the paper, but she can't help it. Sarah gets a bad feeling that if everything isn't exactly right, something terrible may happen. All this worrying, checking, and fixing takes so long that Sarah hardly ever finishes the test before time is up. So even though she knows the work, she often gets an incomplete or even fails.
Sarah tries so hard to hide her habits. She worries that she might be going crazy or that people would think she's weird if they knew what she was doing. Sarah knows that the time she spends washing and checking could be spent having fun with friends or doing her schoolwork, but she can't seem to stop herself. That's because Sarah has obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). take the challege answer this questions truthfully*
Just a while ago our englone teacher showed us a film “As Good As It Gets” (As Good As It Gets by yahoo movies) with main star Jack Nicholson who suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder. Well, it was over exaggerated or maybe his case was severe. Some of obsessive things that he so afraid of germs: he only use the soap once, and once he drops ir, off to the trash can. He only wants one/same waitress to serve hi or he’ll never eat at all, or do his best to get his waiter back. He also carries with him a plastic/disposable spoon and never use the metal spoon of the restaurants. He also separate and put into clean jars m&m according to their color.
SO what do O-C really means? (actually, call me dumb but this was the only time I realized what O-C really meant.) Obsessive-compulsive Disorder is a type of anxiety that happens when there is a problem with the way the mind deals with normal worrying and doubts. A person with OCD usually worries a lot. People with OCD worry so much that they can spend many hours, or even the whole day, worrying about things and trying to make sure the bad things they worry about don't happen. The following are some obsession OCD people have

If being OC is something not nice, is worrying bad too? It’s normal to worry, everyone does worrying. When it’s 8:oo pm and I am not yet home, it’s normal for my mom to worry. If you forgot your assignment, it’s normal to worry and cram. But if the worry is really intense and it can happen over and over again. With OCD, the brain replays the worry thoughts and if nothing is done, the worry feeling can get worse and worse.
Now I know what O-C mean.. Am I an O-C ? Hell not, It always took me half an hour to find my lost notebooks burried under a stack of xerox papers.Perhaps, I am a little with my hair, I can't live a day without combing it or looking at the mirror if it messy or not. ☺ +++++++++++THE KANTIAN TURN++++++++++++
Kantian Ethics: Law of Universalizability While Intphil teacher were discussing Kantian duty ethics, I pause for a thought "kant is loves exagerating things a bit" and this thought led me to a conclusion that Kant is OC about his Ethics. She have also discuss that Kant's neigbor even use Kant as their basis of their time. Kant do his daily rituals, ritually without missing a bit. Isn't that compulsive? Also he was so concerned with "a law that does not accept exceptions" isn't that obsessive? =P

Anterograde amnesia
I am fond of Korean Novelas and Chinese Novelas in both ABS-CBN and GMA. I like when they make it bitin it gives a notion os suspense. I have watched Meteor Garden one and two, The Truth, I cried in Stairway to heaven, Now laugh out loud with frog prince! I like Ming Dao in Frog Prince, he’s a taiwanse mixed Mexican guy with killer looks. Anyway, if you observe them they have something in common. It involves amnesia. And it gives a good twist with the novelas.

Just the other day, HBO featured 50 First Dates 50firstdates . It is a Romantic Comedy with soul. It automatically became one of my few favorite movies. Some movies that reached me are Forest Gump, Big Fish, Patch Adams. Let me tell you a little synopsis about the movie. Henry Roth as played by Adam Sandler, he is a veterinarian at an aquarium in Hawaii ( just like
Sea World in San Diego), falls in love with a girl, Lucy (Drew Barrymore), with short-term memory loss that only last for 24, Everybody tries to replay the same thing, outfit, place and everything that happens in a Sunday. Henry has to keep getting her to fall in love with him every time they meet in order for them to have a relationship, since she never remembers the last time she met him. He used a video camera to tape her everyday routine so that she would remember everything in the next day, until they got married and had a daughter. What is sad though that Lucy had to shed tears everyday as she realize that everything is not real and she had to depend on a video tape for her lost memory of a yesterday.

I am puzzled if such kind of amnesia exist so did some research. Amnesia(ămnē´zh ) , [Gr.,=forgetfulness], condition characterized by loss of memory for long or short intervals of time. It may be caused by injury, shock, senility, severe illness, or mental disease. Some cases of amnesia involve the unconscious suppression of a painful experience and everything remindful of it including the individual's identity. Yahoo encyclopedia. Memory as yahoo encyclopedia informs: in psychology, the storing of learned information, and the ability to recall that which has been stored. It has been hypothesized that three processes occur in remembering: perception and registering of a stimulus; temporary maintenance of the perception, or short-term memory; and lasting storage of the perception, or long-term memory. Two major recognized types of long-term memory are procedural memory, involving the recall of learned skills, and declarative memory, the remembrance of specific stimuli. For long-term memory to occur, there must be a period of information consolidation. This is too jargon though. For me, I think memory involves the five senses, so does that count the subconscious mind?

Anterograde amnesia: (Each time Lucy wakes up, she believes it to still be her father's birthday, Sunday, October 13, and can't remember anything that has taken place after that point.) So there exist such disease. is a form of amnesia where new events are not transferred to long-term memory, so the sufferer will not be able to remember anything that occurs after the onset of this type of amnesia for more than a few moments. Sufferers from "pure" anterograde amnesia will still be able to remember memories laid down before the onset of anterograde amnesia, but will exist in a transient world where anything beyond their immediate attention-span disappears permanently from their consciousness. Steve Wozniak suffered from anterograde amnesia for approximately five weeks in 1981 following the crash of an ultralight plane he piloted. anterogradeamnesia
There actually exist such disease! I can’t believe it! I really thought that the movie is just a product of brilliant imagination, a fiction. That is so sad. It means a person who suffers from anterograde amnesia will never realize that he/she turns 50! When I was young I was taught that money and material possessions will fade but not the memories. So in my 18th birthday, I insisted to tour Korea than to buy me laptops and such. I can say that time has literally stopped in that sense.
The moral: Having an anterograde amnesia must not stop us from loving the person. He/She might have forgot all about us over and over again but that does not prohibit us from loving back the person over and over again. Because you can fill his/her heart’s happiness unconsciously. For the purpose of relating this to philosophy, Dasein Lucy is thrown in an awkward situation where she only have temporality or present. Because of the accident, her mind was shaped in a weird way and we have no way of arguing why it have to happen because dasein are just thrown in a position they don’t.

to karen...
karen. your blog is up and running. you need to make a site where you can upload your pictures though. i don't want to use my host's space- don't want to abuse her kindness. *You can write your comments in the messege box. THANK YOU

the person...

I am quite a vain person, does that explain my love for arts♥? Yeah, I am now a college student of de LaSalle University, and things here keep getting harder. As I said, I love arts! I feel relaxed when I paint. I can live the whole day just painting. I am a Christian, I believe in God almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I am also a diurnal person, I sleep so early, it’s because I need to or I’ll suffer the consequences. I value my family above everything else. Second are my friends. This is my first blog and as you see I’ve been having a lot of difficulties about it. This blog is dedicated to Miss Noelle dela Cruz my philosophy teacher. So obviously it’s all about the question of philosophers and anything under the sun which is related to philosophy. So take your time and read… And hope you’ll like it. ☺
